Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th of April in 1972. She was raised by her maternal grandparents and mother. Scott is an all-only child. Scott received her education at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Upon graduation, Scott enrolled into Temple University. At Temple University, Scott had at two different jobs while taking classes in secondary education. She planned to become the high school's English teacher. The dream, however was in vain when she left the college after a year of studies and was a teacher's assistant. A poet by trade She began to sing in poetry performances live. Then she joined along with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form an ensemble. You Got Me is the outcome of their collaboration. In an Roots performance, she came out as an artist. After that, she secured collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She gained performance experience during the Canada Tour of Broadway's musical Rent. Also, she was the first signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
